Observations on White-browed Guan Penelope jacucaca in north-east Brazil
by H. Redies, 2013, Cotinga 35:61-68 OL (download).
1. Wing-whirring. The wing-whirrs in Fig. 9 and in recordings R150 and R160 were possibly from Penelope superciliaris and not from Penelope jacucaca.
2. Roosting behaviour. After publication of the article, I made several new observations of roosting behaviour
of P. jacucaca which indicate that section "Roosting" (p. 66 of OL edition) is not entirely correct.
2a. I flushed guans, probably White-browed Guans, at night from low vegetation close to the ground.
This suggests that they may sometimes roost at altitudes less than "a few meters above the ground".
2b. I wrote that "..in the late afternoon of 20 July 2010, I observed two groups at Gameleiras,
settling themselves in two different trees, c.30m apart. Vocalizations recorded at the time (mp3 R130, mp3 R140)
were reminiscent of those at dawn, when arriving to feed". When I wrote the article, I assumed that these trees were
the night roosts. However, further observations of similar scenes in early evening at GAM showed that
the guans,
after loudly vocalizing in the trees around GAM, moved inconspicuously and in relative silence to locations at
least 50 meters away, which is presumably where the nocturnal roosts really were.
Sound recordings R130, R140, R150, and R160 were taken down.
