This species comprises the two subspecies mexicanus and melanurus of Himantopus himantopus. Neither the latter species, nor the subspecies, are considered valid by SACC (Remsen et al. 2008).

Ceará would be included in the range of mexicanus. See Hellmayr and Conover 1948.
