This species comprises the two subspecies
mexicanus and melanurus
of Himantopus himantopus. Neither the latter species,
nor the subspecies, are considered valid by SACC
(Remsen et al. 2008).
Ceará would be included in the range of mexicanus. See
and Conover 1948.

and Conover 1948 (p. 212 footnote 2)
for mexicanus, by having a black upper mantle.
Melanurus has a continuous white
band across the upper mantle. Compare with
